My Cry Wolf Book Review - No Spoilers
Plot Summary
I picked up Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs because I wanted an urban fantasy with depth, emotional healing, and a new perspective on werewolf lore. This is the first full-length novel in the Alpha & Omega series, set in the same world as the Mercy Thompson books, but it’s centered on Anna Latham—a survivor who learns she’s a rare Omega wolf after years of abuse in her old Chicago pack. The story opens just after Anna is rescued by Charles Cornick, the Marrok’s son and enforcer, who takes her to Montana as his mate. While Anna struggles to find her footing in a new and sometimes intimidating environment, a dangerous rogue wolf terrorizes the wilds, and Anna and Charles are drawn into a hunt that will test both their new bond and their ability to trust each other.
The plot mixes supernatural politics, pack drama, deep trauma, and a slow-burning romance. Unlike the Mercy Thompson series, the emphasis here is more on emotional growth and relationship building, but there’s still plenty of mystery, action, and a vivid sense of place among the wild forests. Reading the prequel novella “Alpha & Omega” is highly recommended to avoid confusion, as the story picks up right where it leaves off.
Why I Love This Book
I love that Cry Wolf gives Anna so much heart—her journey from fear and self-doubt to someone who refuses to be pushed around is gripping. Watching Anna and Charles—two damaged people, both haunted by their pasts—slowly learn to communicate and trust is emotional and rewarding. Charles is a standout alpha: tough, quiet, and steadfast, but willing to be vulnerable for Anna’s sake.
The writing has a lyrical style but still feels down to earth, and the world-building is meticulous. I was hooked by the way Briggs brings real wolf behavior and pack dynamics into the story—the subtle dominance games, the ways trauma lingers, and how those wounds are gently and sometimes awkwardly healed. The Montana setting, its cold forests and dangerous beauty, adds so much atmosphere and tension. Even side characters have depth, and their stories add weight to the pack’s politics. The pacing leans toward character moments rather than pure action, but that’s exactly why the romance feels real.
Who Will Like This Book
If you want emotional slow-burn romance, healing after trauma, and urban fantasy without overwhelming steam, Cry Wolf will hit the mark. Fans of the Mercy Thompson series will especially enjoy the direct connections and cameos. It’s perfect for readers who want their paranormal romance to focus on partnership, trust, and the complexity of recovery—not just lust or action. If you’re looking for fade-to-black intimacy and thoughtful, character-driven storytelling, this is a great pick.
⚠️ Trigger warning: This book deals with past abuse (not graphically depicted), PTSD, and emotional healing. There is some violence and implied intimacy, but the steam level is low.
