My Out of the Dark Book Review - No Spoilers
Plot Summary
Out of the Dark by Danielle James is the first in the Forbidden Love series, centering on Breanna (“Brea”), who relocates to Los Angeles only to find the city isn’t any easier than the life she left behind. She’s wary of the supernatural—vampires and werewolves are an everyday reality here—especially after rough first encounters. Brea’s path collides with Angel Knight, a famous rockstar and a vampire, whose first meeting with her is equal parts awkward and fated. He believes Brea is his life mate, but trust doesn’t come easily. Their relationship is complicated from the start: clashing personalities, mixed signals, and a truly rocky road to any kind of romance. As a rogue vampire begins to threaten their world, Angel does everything in his power to protect Brea and win her trust. This story blends suspense, humor, family dynamics, and plenty of supernatural intrigue for a fast-paced paranormal romance, with both main and side characters bringing energy to every page.
Why I Love This Book
I love how Out of the Dark kept me hooked—even when Brea’s stubbornness drove me up the wall. The story moves fast, never letting me get bored, and the mix of mystery, romance, and tight-knit supernatural family drama is exactly what I want in a paranormal romance. Angel is over-possessive at times, but I can’t help but enjoy how fiercely he cares and how vulnerable he lets himself be with Brea. Their back-and-forth is messy as hell—sometimes sweet, sometimes infuriating—and that messy energy feels real. I appreciate that the romance isn’t instant; the push and pull, the jealousy, the misunderstandings—they all make me care more about the payoff. The sex scenes are steamy without being over the top, and there’s always a core of heart and humor to balance out the angst. Angel’s group of friends and family are all people I would read entire books about, and the family feel of the side characters pulls me deeper into the world. I always want more of that feeling. Even when I found Brea frustrating, her journey from mistrust to acceptance had me rooting for her.
Who Will Like This Book
If you’re looking for a fast-paced paranormal romance with vampires, fated mates, and messy, opposites-attract energy, this one will pull you in. You’ll probably enjoy this if you like protective heroes, witty side characters, and stories that blend suspense with romance and humor. Be aware: Brea is stubborn and immature at times, which can be divisive, but if you like heroines who have a lot to learn (and are a little bit of a mess), you might find yourself invested. If you want flawless editing or tight pacing, be prepared for a slightly rough ride, but the payoff in heart and entertainment is worth it to me. There’s some violence, murder mystery, and supernatural action, but nothing exceptionally graphic. Most triggers are typical for vampire romance: stalking, danger, and high emotional tension, but not the extreme content you’d find in very dark or taboo reads.

The spice is well-balanced—there are open-door, steamy scenes but it isn’t wall-to-wall heat. The romance builds slow-burn style, and when things finally get heated, it’s satisfying without overshadowing the main storyline.
