Sea of Ruin Book Review - No Spoilers
Introduction
This morning, Rebecca insisted I try one of her new smoothie bowl recipes—and ended up dripping acai-purple juice all over my clean notebook. I sighed, wiped it off, and decided I needed something gritty and wild to cleanse my mental palate. Sea of Ruin by Pam Godwin fit the bill.
Plot Summary
Sea of Ruin by Pam Godwin is a dark, intense pirate romance set in the 1700s. The protagonist, Bennett Sharp, is a pirate captain running from her past and the man she once loved, Priest Farrell. She’s hunted, betrayed, and trying to hold on to the compass her father left her—one tied to secrets and treasure. When her ship is overtaken, she surrenders to Lord Ashley Cutler, a naval commodore who intends to take her to England for trial. Caught between her past with Priest and the dangerous attraction she feels for Ashley, Bennett must navigate betrayal, shifting power, and choices that could cost her everything. The story blends adventure, danger, and twisted romance with political and personal stakes.
Why I Love This Book
I’m drawn to books that break your heart and then stitch you back together in unexpected ways—and *Sea of Ruin* does exactly that. Bennett’s resilience in the face of endless betrayal made me root for her fiercely. Her scars—emotional and physical—don’t define her, but they shape her in human, broken, real ways.
I loved the tension between the two men she’s tied to: Priest, who haunts her history, and Ashley, whose sense of duty and hidden layers complicate everything. That dynamic—so messy and volatile—kept me uneasy and invested. Every decision Bennett weighs feels heavy, because the cost is so real.
The pace surprised me. There are quiet, painful moments of self-doubt, followed by sudden, brutal episodes that jolt you. The violence and emotional cruelty can be hard to sit with—but I think that’s part of what makes this story linger. Some of the scenes left me breathless, unsettled, and strangely exhilarated.
Who Will Like This Book
If you like dark romance, morally ambiguous characters, and high-stakes political/adventure settings, this might be a strong match. If you enjoy pirates, forbidden love, or “why-choose” dynamics (MMF), you’ll find a lot here to grip you. Also good for readers who don’t shy from emotional cruelty and complex power plays.
⚠️ Trigger warning: This book contains violence, nonconsensual scenes, torture, emotional abuse, and heavy psychological trauma. Please proceed carefully and read trigger lists before starting.

Steam Level
This is one of the steamier romances I’ve read. The intimate scenes are bold, explicit, and woven deep into conflict and power. The erotic tension is integral—it's not just spice, it’s part of the emotional fabric.
