Spark of Fate Book Review - No Spoilers
Introduction
On Sunday morning, I had planned to work through edits with a pancake breakfast and hot coffee. Instead, a thunderstorm rolled in early — big dark clouds, loud claps, wind whipping the windows — and Rebecca hovered with her sketchbook, Marcus peeked out at the lightning, and I grabbed *Spark of Fate*. There was something about the electricity in the air that matched what I was about to read.
Plot Summary
Spark of Fate by Tessa Hale is the first book in the *Shifting Fate* series. The heroine is Rowan, a girl reeling from the recent death of her sister in a car accident. Her family moves to Cloverdale, Washington, hoping for a fresh start where no one knows their past. Rowan wants to fade into the background. But she soon discovers she doesn’t quite fit in: strange sparks of power go off whenever she touches certain guys at her new school, and there’s something under her skin she can’t explain. She meets Holden (and others) who sense she is unique, and Rowan begins having to deal with mean-girls, family tension, her adoptive mother blaming her for things, and her own guilt and grief. As more is revealed about Rowan’s real nature, her connections with these guys, and the danger that comes along with power, she’s pulled into trouble she couldn’t have anticipated.
Why I Love This Book
I love how raw this book feels emotionally. Rowan’s grief over losing her sister, her guilt, her awkwardness in a new place — they’re all messy, and the author lets them be messy. I connect with that. I also love the developing tension with the guys who are linked to Rowan. It isn’t just instant love-at-first-touch (though the sparks are immediate), there’s emotional push and pull, questions, uncertainty — which makes the romance more satisfying. The found family vibe is strong, too — seeing Rowan build connections with Holden, Vaughn, Lucas, Anson, Keene (and discovering so much about who she is) gave me moments of comfort and excitement. Also, the paranormal / shifter lore is fun. The way magic, fated mates, and pack politics are woven in felt like enough mystery to keep me guessing. And yes, I like that there’s some heat, but it’s not over the top. It feels balanced with the emotional stakes.
Who Will Like This Book
If you like paranormal romance with wolf shifters, fated mates, and a reverse harem setup (Rowan ends up with more than one male love interest), this one will hit the right notes. Also, if you enjoy stories where the heroine is coping with trauma, guilt, and family messiness, but learns strength and connection, this is for you. The school setting, mean girls, secrets, and discovering your power tropes are here. If you prefer romance without too much angst, or with minimal supernatural elements, this may be more than you expect—in a good way, if you like complexity.
⚠️ Trigger warning: This book has death of a sibling, emotional abuse from a parent, grief, guilt, and some family conflict. Some violence and intense moments involving the supernatural/shifters.

Steam Level
Romance is sensual but restrained in this first book. There are sparks, attraction, and some intimate moments, but nothing extremely explicit. It’s more about tension, connection, and emotion than constant heat.
