My Taken by the Gargoyle King Book Review - No Spoilers
Plot Summary
Taken by the Gargoyle King by Robin O’Connor is a steamy sci-fi monster romance about a ruthless gargoyle king and a fiercely independent human doctor. The story follows the king—a guardian monster who’s used to getting his way—and a doctor who finds herself swept into his world under unexpected, possibly dangerous circumstances. Their paths cross when the doctor is tasked with finding a miracle cure for a sick child, but soon, deeper forces draw her into the intrigue of gargoyle politics, ancient magic, and a romance she never saw coming. The book guarantees a happy ending and balances high-stakes rescue, survival, and sizzling tension all under one stony roof.
Why I Love This Book
I love how unapologetically fun and sexy this book is. The gargoyle king is magnetic—both dangerous and deeply loyal. His protective streak and blunt honesty grabbed me right away. I enjoyed watching the human heroine push back just as fiercely, holding her own in every scene instead of getting lost in his shadow. Their banter is sharp but full of heat, and their chemistry sizzles from the first page. The monster romance tropes are all here—forced proximity, snark, some possessiveness, and those classic “touch her and die” vibes that make these stories addictive.
What stands out to me most is the genuine emotional core beneath the spice. Both main characters have their scars—the king bears the weight of leadership, and the doctor brings courage even when she’s in over her head. I felt for both of them as they fought not just external threats, but also their resistance to falling hard for each other. The story delivers on action, external stakes, and just enough fantasy world-building to make the whole thing feel immersive. Best of all, there’s a stubborn sweetness that sneaks in between all the steam and danger, making the payoff feel earned.
Who Will Like This Book
If you want monster romance with lots of steam and a growly, larger-than-life hero, this will hit the spot. It’s for readers who like feisty heroines, touch of found family (with a sick child plot), and stories where fantasy romance collides with sci-fi adventure. Lovers of forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers or opposites-attract blazing chemistry, and “monster boyfriend” books in general will find plenty to enjoy here.
⚠️ Trigger warning: The book contains spicy scenes between consenting adults, fantasy violence, medical emergencies, and some power dynamics typical of monster romance. There’s nothing graphic in terms of violence or trauma, but expect plenty of heat and assertive language. Read only if you’re comfortable with open-door romance and fantasy kink.

Steam Level
The book serves up plenty of detailed open-door scenes—enough to satisfy fans looking for heat, but with an emotional core that balances out the spice. It’s not the wildest out there, but definitely 18+ with frequent steam.
