My That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf Book Review - No Spoilers
Plot Summary
I picked up That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf by Kimberly Lemming when I wanted something outrageous—a spicy, cozy fantasy romance with a twist on the “fated mate” trope. The story kicks off as Brie, a cheesemaker running her own business, tries to fend off a loser at a local festival who won’t take “no” for an answer. Frustrated, she tosses her drink at him. She misses—spectacularly—and accidentally hits Felix, a rugged werewolf pirate visiting her town. The catch? The drink was spiked with a love potion.
Now, Felix is convinced Brie is his fated mate and launches into a full-on campaign to win her heart. While Brie is just trying to keep her life (and her cheese shop) together, she ends up with a wildly devoted werewolf doing her chores and claiming her at every turn. Village women start disappearing, mysterious ghouls are on the prowl, and Brie ends up teaming up with her friends (and Felix) to solve the mystery, all while navigating Felix’s magically-enhanced feelings and figuring out if there’s a real connection underneath it all.
Why I Love This Book
I love the sheer comedy and chaos of this book—it’s self-aware, goes all-in on the ridiculous premise, and somehow manages to feel cozy, even as things get steamy and the plot veers off in wild directions. The banter is nonstop, and the supporting characters bring energy and solidarity, building a true sense of camaraderie, especially among the women.
Felix is over-the-top, earnest, and surprisingly sweet for a lovestruck werewolf pirate. Brie’s mix of skepticism and attraction makes their romance funny and honest, especially as she tries to figure out if any of this is real. I also enjoy how the author plays with the tropes, putting a modern lens on the “fated mate” storyline and poking fun at insta-love even while it’s happening. The mystery side plot with the missing women and rogue ghouls adds fun worldbuilding and action in between all the spice and hilarity.
And yeah, this book does not hold back on hot scenes (including some monsters and kink that surprise even Brie), but they’re written with humor and a strong focus on clear consent, which I respect and appreciate.
Who Will Like This Book
If you want a cozy but spicy fantasy rom-com—packed with monster romance, outrageous scenarios, and a healthy dose of self-aware humor—you’ll love this book. It’s for readers who enjoy fated mates, forced proximity, “touch her and die” protectiveness, and wonky magical mishaps. The book leans hard into comedic mayhem and kink. If you enjoy the Monster Smash Agency series, Ice Planet Barbarians, or other over-the-top monster romances, you’ll feel right at home.
⚠️ Trigger warning: Explicit sexual content (including some monster kink and tentacles), kidnapping, cults, imprisonment, and themes of consent under magical influence. The tone is irreverent, but it does deal with danger and trauma (briefly). Always check the author’s warnings if you have triggers or sensitivities.
