My The Pool Boy Book Review - No Spoilers
Plot Summary
The Pool Boy by Jamila Jasper opens The Handyman Series with a fast, fiery BWWM novella. Kishawn Morris, a successful Black businesswoman in Los Angeles, is facing an empty house after sending her kids to college and splitting with her cheating husband. When her assistant introduces her to Tom Jackson—the new, 30-year-old pool boy—Kishawn gets more than just pool maintenance. Tom is young, ripped, and wears nothing but a speedo in the California sun. Their connection is immediate, and Kishawn finds herself drawn into a romance that starts with a simple drink inside and becomes a lust-fueled, unforgettable affair. This is a short, high-heat read about second chances, sex, and crossing lines you never expected. The story is direct, doesn’t overcomplicate, and just lets the sparks fly. It’s part of a series featuring strong Black women and blue-collar, take-charge men, each story working as a standalone, but together adding heat and humor to the collection.
Why I Love This Book
I love how this book refuses to waste time—Kishawn and Tom have chemistry from the start, and every scene cranks up the heat. The power dynamic is fun but never cruel; I root for Kishawn to find happiness and pleasure on her own terms after the heartbreak she’s suffered. There’s a freshness in seeing an older Black woman get center stage in a steamy, unapologetically sexy romance. It’s short and to the point, but the story has snark and humor that balances out the explicit scenes. I appreciate how both leads feel confident and strong, and even though I wish I could see more of their history, what’s here satisfies that need for instant attraction and fantasy. Sometimes I want a quick, spicy read that delivers exactly what’s promised, and this book does that. It’s easy to relate to Kishawn’s vulnerability and her decision to seize happiness, no matter who’s watching. The dialog is fun, the pacing is fast, and the sex is presented as something empowering, not just for titillation. Each time I finish, I’m tempted to read the next story in the series—the world feels open, bold, and just a little bit wild.
Who Will Like This Book
If you’re looking for a super-steamy, interracial romance with a confident heroine and a much younger, alpha hero, you’ll want to read this. Fans of quick novellas, instant attraction, and age-gap love stories will be happy. There’s plenty of humor and a strong “older woman/younger man” trope, plus open-door scenes that don’t hold back. Don’t expect a lot of backstory or slow-burn—this is a fantasy for readers who want their heat fast and their endings happy. If you want deep character development or emotional drama, this isn’t the book for you.
⚠️ Trigger warning: Contains explicit sex, references to marital betrayal, and age gap relationship. This is an adult-only story; check content notes for your comfort.
