My The Question Book Review - No Spoilers
Plot Summary
I picked up The Question because I wanted a romance that digs deep into friendship, loss, and what it means to make an impossible promise. The story starts with Gail Henderson, a recent widow still reeling from the loss of her husband and young son. Her life takes an unexpected turn when her best friend, Crystal—who has suffered five miscarriages—asks Gail to act as a surrogate so that she and her husband, Rashid, can have the biological child they've dreamed of. Gail is stunned, knowing the emotional toll it could take, but Crystal insists, and after a lot of soul-searching, Gail agrees.
The surrogacy agreement is meant to keep things clear and simple. But as Gail progresses with the pregnancy, Crystal becomes distant while Rashid gets more involved—showing up to appointments, checking in, and growing closer to Gail in ways neither of them foresaw. At the same time, Gail meets Greg, a big-hearted divorce lawyer whose support gives her comfort just as her world gets more complicated. When Crystal vanishes right before Gail gives birth to twins, everything unravels. Rashid is left devastated, and Gail steps in to help him with the babies, setting up a story about grief, attraction, and the unpredictable ways love can grow.
Why I Love This Book
I love how The Question explores territory most romance novels never touch. The emotional intensity in this story is off the charts—every character is walking wounded, trying to do the right thing even when it hurts. Gail’s grief feels real; her hesitance and bravery in the face of Crystal’s request make me root for her even harder. I felt every ounce of awkwardness, pain, and hope as she navigates being both surrogate and friend, then something more.
The dynamics between Gail, Crystal, Rashid, and Greg are complicated but believable. I love that the attraction between Gail and Rashid sneaks up slowly, buried under guilt and shared responsibility. When the two finally come together, it feels inevitable and earned—full of longing, vulnerability, and the lingering pain of their losses. Greg’s role adds extra warmth; his patience and acceptance prove that love stories can have more than one path. There are moments that made me laugh through tears, and others that kept me up late needing to see what happens next.
Who Will Like This Book
If you want a romance that tackles tough themes—grief, infertility, betrayal, forgiveness—this is for you. This book is honest about the mess that comes with loving and losing, and it doesn’t sweep hard feelings under the rug. Fans of emotional, character-driven stories will find a lot to dig into. There’s heat, but also a lot of heart and plenty of twists that make the payoff worth the rough ride.
⚠️ Trigger warning: This book confronts miscarriage, grief, trauma, infidelity, abandonment, and complicated family dynamics. There are explicit love scenes, emotionally heavy moments, and real angst surrounding surrogacy, parenthood, and loss. If these topics are sensitive for you, check the trigger warnings before starting.
