Last week, Rebecca came home from school dramatically sighing about some misunderstanding with her theater friends. She flopped onto the couch and announced, "Mom, nobody understands my artistic vision." I tried very hard not to laugh. Marcus, ever the helpful little brother, chimed in with, "Maybe your vision is just weird." The ensuing chaos involved thrown pillows, Matthew's intervention, and me escaping to my reading nook. Sometimes a girl just needs a dark, brooding stalker romance to remind her that family drama could be way more intense. That's exactly what I found in Phantom by H.D. Carlton.
Plot Summary

This is a standalone novel that pushes boundaries and explores the darkest corners of obsessive love.
Why I Love This Book
I love how H.D. Carlton doesn't shy away from the darkness. The atmosphere is suffocating in the best way possible, making you feel like you're trapped right alongside the protagonist. The stalker character is both terrifying and somehow compelling, which creates this uncomfortable tension that kept me turning pages well past midnight. I appreciate that Carlton doesn't try to soften the edges or make this palatable for everyone. The writing is visceral and raw, pulling you into a world where right and wrong blur into shades of gray. The character development is surprisingly nuanced for such a dark premise, and I found myself genuinely invested in their twisted dynamic. The pacing is relentless, building tension until you can barely breathe. It's the kind of book that makes you question your own reactions and keeps you thinking long after you've finished.
Who Will Like This Book
If you enjoy dark romance with morally gray characters, stalker themes, and psychological intensity, you'll likely love this story. This book is definitely not for everyone. It's dark, it's taboo, and it pushes boundaries in ways that will make some readers uncomfortable. If you prefer sweet, light romances or need your heroes to be traditionally heroic, this isn't your book. But if you love authors like Penelope Douglas, Sara Cate, or other H.D. Carlton books like Haunting Adeline, you'll probably devour this one too.
⚠️ Trigger warning: stalking, dubious consent, manipulation, obsessive behavior, violence, explicit sexual content, morally gray situations, psychological manipulation, confinement, and potentially disturbing themes throughout.

Steam Level
Phantom is extremely explicit with detailed, graphic sexual content throughout. The scenes are intense, raw, and very much on-page. The steam is woven into the dark, obsessive nature of the relationship, making it integral to the story rather than just added spice. If you're looking for fade-to-black or mild romance, this is definitely not it. This book earns every one of those chili peppers.
