My Chasing Your Ghost Book Review - No Spoilers
Plot Summary
Chasing Your Ghost by Maggie I. Fields is the first in The Unseen series. Riley, a college-age medium who inherited her ability from her father, has always stood out as the “weird girl” who can see and communicate with ghosts. Just before college, she moves in with her estranged mother and a new stepfamily—where the past isn’t quite at rest. Riley quickly encounters Asher, her stepbrother Noah’s missing best friend, whose disappearance is unsolved and whose presence as a ghost only she can sense. With the help of Noah and her stepsister Ella, Riley sets out to help Asher—unraveling the mystery of what happened to him while keeping the truth about her talents secret. As the investigation deepens, Riley’s bond with Asher grows, and she finds herself fighting with both heart and head against the pain of inevitable loss.
Why I Love This Book
I love how this book blends paranormal suspense with raw emotion. Riley’s voice is sharp, guarded, but full of feeling—her growth from outcast to someone willing to risk connection had me hooked. The premise feels authentic and heartbreaking; watching Riley fall for Asher, knowing she’ll eventually have to say goodbye, really hurt in the best way. I care about these characters—their flaws, sadness, and messy relationships. The story’s pacing and reveals push me to keep reading, and I couldn’t tear myself away until the very last page.
The dynamic between Riley and Asher is intense and bittersweet. I’m drawn to how the book deals honestly with feeling alone, the weight of secrets, and the ache of wanting something you might have to let go. I cried more than once, especially in scenes where Riley is forced to balance helping a lost soul with respecting her family’s grief. There’s plenty of suspense and a bit of supernatural chilliness, yet the overall mood is hopeful and full of heart.
Even though the supernatural mechanics are sometimes simple, the emotional stakes keep everything grounded. The writing is filled with little details—pop culture, humor, grief—that make this more than just a ghost story. It felt both unique and familiar, and it’s a story I won’t forget any time soon.
