My Iain: A Highlander Romance (Ghosts of Culloden Moor) Book Review - No Spoilers
Plot Summary
Iain: A Highlander Romance by Melissa Mayhue is part of the Ghosts of Culloden Moor series. The story centers on Iain, a Scottish warrior whose spirit has been bound to Culloden Moor for more than two hundred years. Only his thirst for vengeance keeps him tethered there—until destiny calls. Modern-day heroine Sallie manages a tourist property in Colorado, and her life is suddenly in danger. That’s when Soni, the witch guiding the Culloden ghosts, sends Iain to protect her. As Iain faces this modern world and his quest for peace, Sallie must confront threats, tangled feelings, and questions about her own heart. Their journey is about facing the past, understanding loss, and finding purpose far from where either began.
Why I Love This Book
I love how the book balances the Scottish historical legacy with a heartfelt ghost romance. The Highlander spirit gives the story a sense of power and sadness, but also hope. I felt for Iain—he’s loyal, haunted, and honorable, even though he’s long dead. Seeing him adjust to the modern world led to a lot of sweet, sometimes funny moments. Sallie is easy to relate to—she’s strong but vulnerable, determined, and believable. Their chemistry builds quietly, and I love that it’s more about trust, healing, and second chances than physical heat.
What stays with me is the theme of letting go. The story helped me reflect on grief and forgiveness, not in a heavy-handed way, but with gentle warmth. The supernatural twist feels right—it’s never over the top, but instead feels woven into the landscape and the characters’ struggles. The book is easy to read, cozy, and comforting, offering adventure but also heart.
It’s also satisfying to see elements of Scottish history, the sorrow of Culloden Moor, and that sense of unfinished business come full circle. Even when things got a little silly, I cared about what happened to Iain and Sallie. The blend between past and present, magic and reality, makes the whole series (and this entry) memorable.
Who Will Like This Book
If you love Scottish romance, time travel tropes, gentle paranormal stories, or tales of ghosts finally earning peace, you’ll enjoy this book. It’s a quick, feel-good read for fans of Highlander heroes and strong but relatable heroines. If you want historical touches and just a touch of magic—with more emotion than heat—this series is ideal. There’s nothing graphic here, and it’s suitable for adults and older teens.
⚠️ Trigger warning: This novel includes themes related to historical battles, grief, and loss, but everything is handled tenderly. There’s some danger and suspense, but it’s not dark or graphic.
